Session 1: Tracking Contaminants: Detection, Fate, Transport, and Uptake in the Environment
Wednesday 11th June - 10:45 - 13:00
Presentation: Tracking Environmental Contaminants: Methods, Challenges, and Future Directions
Presenters: Eve Tarring, Isla Thorpe, Imogen Bailes, Thilakshani Atugoda
Presentation Abstract: Within the theme of “Tracking Contaminants: Detection, Fate, Transport and Uptake in the Environment”, we will present a broad range of projects, achievements and collaborations within our own work and the research in the wider field. In this talk, we will introduce the research topics of the group and their links, both methodical and conceptual, to address some of the key challenges facing contaminant research. These will include sampling, analytical techniques, modelling, monitoring and different environmental matrices. We will also discuss more in-depth topics which have formed a chapter of work for the final year PhD students in the group and how a particular challenge within this research area has been addressed. This briefly comprises of pet parasiticide fate in aquatic environments, trends and inter species comparisons of chemical compounds in stranded marine mammals, microplastics in agricultural soils through sludge application and understanding the mechanisms of toxicity behind water-soluble polymer exposure to freshwater organisms. Finally, we will have a poster spotlight introducing the topics and individual posters of the group.
