Session 3: Re-thinking Risk: Chemicals in Synergy and Real-World Assessment
Thursday 12th June - 09:30 - 12:30
Presentation: Title
Presenters: Dylan Asbury, Matt Cato, Lowenna Jones, Charlotte Robison-Smith, Safia El Amiri, Isabel Navarro Law, Olasunkanmi Dosunmu
Presentation Abstract: This dynamic three-hour session will explore the interconnected challenges of chemical mixture interactions, environmental stressors, and landscape-scale risk assessment, emphasizing how scientific insights can more effectively inform policy, regulation and public understanding. The first half will feature expert-led presentations highlighting recent advances in ecological risk assessment of chemical mixtures at both small and large scales, complexities of risk assessment at the landscape scale and how this might support a more holistic understanding of ecological threat, and challenges in bridging the gap between science, policy and public perception for addressing real-world environmental threats through interdisciplinary collaboration.
These talks will provide the foundation for the second half—an interactive session designed to apply these insights to tangible policy and communication challenges. Attendees will engage with poster discussions and an interactive, hands-on activity that seeks to integrate ideas of chemical risk, public perception, policy and regulatory development. This interactive exercise will prompt participants to navigate the complexities of environmental risk, integrating uncertainties around chemical hazard with regulatory need and public concern. Through the presentation of real-world scenarios, the session will encourage participants to think critically about how we can better communicate the risk of chemical substances and mixtures alongside scientific and technical advances to develop more effective strategies for bridging the gap between scientific research, policy and societal action.
